The machine will be used for a diverse range of research applications in nanoelectronics, bioelectronics and optoelectronics at The University of Glasgow. It will compliment our extensive fabrication facilities, which include large area high-resolution electron beam lithography, and dry etch facilities. These technologies will be used to fabricate etched silicon and electroformed nickel stamping tools. Our Department has strong links with the biological sciences and the Obducat imprinting tool will be particularly important for the fabrication of nano-embossed surfaces used in studying the adhesion of cells to surfaces. In the few months we have had the machine on trial we have used it to develop a process for the fabrication of working pHEMTs with T-shaped gates. As far as we can establish this has not been done before and the work is to be presented at the forthcoming EIPBN conference in California. Our Department's commercial activities are handled by a university company called Kelvin Nanotechnology LTD, which has been responsible for spinning out more than three companies now based in Scotland. In the future there is some possibility the nanoimprinter may be used for prototyping applications involving these and other companies."
